The new high capacity Vienna-St.Pölten railway line is part of a larger scheme to upgrade the westbound axis (Westbahn) of the Austrian Rapid Railway System.
The Perschling tunnel chain consists of three tunnels:

- Reiserbergtunnel: 1.3 km
- Stierschweiffeldtunnel: 2.3 km
- Raingrubentunnel: 2.7 km
The tunnels are bored by one of the strongest and biggest hard rock TBMs.
The 13m-diameter TBM is equipped with a total of 76 disc cutters. The heading at Stierschweiffeldtunnel was launched in December 2005.
