One of the largest Austrian Railway projects is the Koralm railway at present. The new line will provide Graz and Klagenfurt with a direct railway link at the first time. The most prominent tunnel along this stretch is the Tunnel Koralm from Deutschlandsberg (Styria) to St. Andrä (Carinthia). Austria´s longest Tunnel has got a length of 32.8 km on two single-track tubes.
To get further information about the geological features of the Koralm massif where the tunnel will cross and in order to find out the best fitting initial point for the tunnel shield machine, several investigation galleries and shafts are under construction on either side as schematically shown on the left side. Estimated completion date of the main tunnel: 2016.
