Because of the longitudinal gradient of 5,2%, the Tunnel Achrain accommodates a climbing lane in addition to the two directional lanes.
First in order to explore geological conditions a gallery has to be constructed with TBM parallel to the main tunnel. After completion of the second tube this gallery is going to be used as escape, rescue and service tunnel.
At the western tunnel portal an 80 m long U-box has to be founded on about 165 bored piles (due to difficult ground conditions: peat zone, as well as sequences of silt and clay).
